What it covers, who it's for, and how it fits your industry.
AED training teaches you how to use an Automated External Defibrillator alongside high-quality CPR to treat a cardiac arrest. It is a focused, half-day course built around the moment that matters most — the first few minutes after someone collapses — when early defibrillation can transform survival rates from under 10% to over 70%.
AEDs are now installed in tens of thousands of UK workplaces, schools, sports clubs, gyms, shops and public spaces. They are deliberately designed to be used by untrained members of the public, but research consistently shows that confident, practised responders use them faster, more accurately and more often than untrained bystanders. That is why workplaces with a defibrillator on site should train a pool of responders — and refresh that training every year.
The course is suitable for anyone, with no previous first aid experience required. It is widely taken by workplace first aiders, office and retail teams, sports club staff and volunteers, school staff, community venue managers, gym instructors, event marshals and members of the public who want to be confident responders. Many employers train all their public-facing staff so there is always a trained responder on shift.
Over 3–4 hours you cover recognising cardiac arrest, starting effective CPR, fetching and switching on an AED, applying the pads safely, delivering a shock and continuing care until the ambulance arrives. The course also covers working as a team with bystanders, post-event care and handover to paramedics. Every element is reinforced with hands-on practice using training defibrillators and adult CPR manikins.
Learners receive a Brity AED & CPR CPD certificate, valid for 12 months and aligned with UK Resuscitation Council guidelines. Annual refresher training is strongly recommended — both CPR technique and AED confidence start to decay within months of training without regular practice, so an annual top-up is the most effective way to keep your responder pool ready.
We deliver AED training as scheduled public courses across the UK and as on-site team training at customer premises, sports clubs, schools and community venues nationwide. Our instructors are experienced practitioners, class sizes are kept small for genuine hands-on time, and in most cases learners are certificated on the day, or within 24 hours where possible.

The right first aid qualification depends on your sector and risk level. The HSE expects employers to base provision on a needs assessment — here's a starting point for common industries.
| Industry | Recommended course | Typical ratio | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workplaces with AEDs on site | Staff training in CPR & AED use strongly recommended | — | HSE / Resus Council UK |
| Public-access AED sites (gyms, schools, retail) | Trained operators on each shift | — | Resus Council UK guidance |
Based on HSE L74 Appendix 6 and sector guidance. Always run a documented needs assessment.
The HSE doesn't set fixed numbers — it asks employers to complete a first aid needs assessment. Use the guide below as a starting point. Low hazard covers offices, retail and most service environments. Higher hazard covers construction, manufacturing, warehousing, food processing and similar. In the guidance below, EFAW means Emergency First Aid at Work (1-day course) and FAW means First Aid at Work (3-day course).
Enter a headcount to see HSE guidance.
| Employees | Lower hazard (office, retail) | Higher hazard (construction, manufacturing) |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than 5 | At least 1 Appointed Person | At least 1 Appointed Person — consider EFAW if hazards present |
| 5 – 25 | At least 1 EFAW-trained first aider | At least 1 FAW-trained first aider |
| 26 – 50 | At least 1 EFAW or FAW first aider | At least 1 FAW first aider |
| 51 – 100 | 1 FAW first aider per 100 employees | 1 FAW per 50 employees |
| Over 100 | 1 FAW per additional 100 employees | 1 FAW per additional 50 employees |
Guidance based on HSE L74 (Health and Safety [First-Aid] Regulations 1981). Final numbers should come from your own needs assessment.
