What it covers, who it's for, and how it fits your industry.
First Aid at Work (FAW) is the comprehensive 3-day, HSE-aligned qualification for designated workplace first aiders in higher-risk environments. It is the standard qualification employers turn to when their first aid needs assessment identifies significant hazards — for example construction sites, factories, warehouses, engineering workshops, food production, chemical handling and similar settings.
The course is built around the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the HSE guidance L74. These require every employer to provide adequate and appropriate first aid equipment, facilities and trained personnel. Where the workplace risk assessment identifies real potential for serious injury or illness, the longer FAW course is the right choice rather than the shorter Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification.
FAW is designed for designated first aiders in higher-risk workplaces, but it is also widely chosen by health and safety officers, site supervisors, team leaders, care and leisure staff, hospitality teams and anyone with a serious duty of care to colleagues or members of the public. Many employers train several team members so cover is in place across shifts, holidays and absences.
Over three days (18 guided learning hours) you cover CPR and defibrillator use, unresponsive casualty management, severe bleeding and shock, choking, fractures and dislocations, burns and scalds, head and spinal injury, eye injury and a full range of medical conditions — including heart attack, stroke, asthma, diabetes, epilepsy and anaphylaxis. Every topic is reinforced with realistic, scenario-based practice using professional manikins, dressings and defibrillators.
Learners who complete the course receive a a Level 3 Award or professional certificate in First Aid at Work (depending on the provider, location and course requirements), issued by an awarding body. Assessment is continuous and supportive: seven practical assessments across the three days plus two short multiple-choice theory papers. There is no high-pressure final exam — instructors confirm competence as you progress. The certificate is valid for 3 years, after which the 2-day FAW Requalification course renews it.
At Brity we keep class sizes small (maximum 12), our instructors come from emergency-services, clinical and safety backgrounds, and in most cases learners are certificated on the day, or within 24 hours where possible. We deliver FAW as scheduled public courses and as on-site team training at customer premises nationwide.
A First Aid at Work (FAW) course is a 3-day course (18 guided learning hours), typically delivered over three consecutive working days.
Employers in higher-risk environments such as construction, manufacturing, warehousing and food production, based on a first aid needs assessment.
A FAW certificate is valid for 3 years. Renewal is via the 2-day First Aid at Work Requalification course before expiry to keep cover continuous.
Yes — a FAW course can be delivered at customer premises nationwide for groups, with flexible scheduling across consecutive or split days.
Through continuous practical observation across seven skill areas plus two short multiple-choice theory papers. Instructor support is provided throughout.
No — FAW is a complete standalone qualification, so prior EFAW certification is not required.
Public First Aid at Work (FAW) course prices vary by location and date — current pricing is shown on each available course. On-site delivery is quoted per group and is usually more cost-effective for 6+ learners.

The right first aid qualification depends on your sector and risk level. The HSE expects employers to base provision on a needs assessment — here's a starting point for common industries.
| Industry | Recommended course | Typical ratio | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Construction sites | FAW-qualified first aiders required (ratios per risk assessment) | — | HSE L74 / CDM 2015 |
| Manufacturing & warehousing | FAW first aiders, 1 per 50 staff typical | — | HSE L74 |
| Higher-risk processing & engineering | FAW first aiders, ratios driven by risk assessment | — | HSE L74 |
Based on HSE L74 Appendix 6 and sector guidance. Always run a documented needs assessment.
The HSE doesn't set fixed numbers — it asks employers to complete a first aid needs assessment. Use the guide below as a starting point. Low hazard covers offices, retail and most service environments. Higher hazard covers construction, manufacturing, warehousing, food processing and similar. In the guidance below, EFAW means Emergency First Aid at Work (1-day course) and FAW means First Aid at Work (3-day course).

| Fewer than 5 | At least 1 Appointed Person | At least 1 Appointed Person — consider EFAW if hazards present |
| 5 – 25 | At least 1 EFAW-trained first aider | At least 1 FAW-trained first aider |
| 26 – 50 | At least 1 EFAW or FAW first aider | At least 1 FAW first aider |
| 51 – 100 | 1 FAW first aider per 100 employees | 1 FAW per 50 employees |
| Over 100 | 1 FAW per additional 100 employees | 1 FAW per additional 50 employees |
Guidance based on HSE L74 (Health and Safety [First-Aid] Regulations 1981). Final numbers should come from your own needs assessment.
