Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is a 1-day first aid course and HSE-aligned qualification designed to equip employees with the essential skills to respond confidently in a workplace emergency. It is the most widely chosen first aid course for low-risk workplaces such as offices, shops, schools and small employers, and is fully accepted by the Health and Safety Executive, Ofsted and insurance providers.
The course is built around the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, which require every employer to provide adequate first aid arrangements based on a first aid needs assessment. EFAW is usually the right qualification for workplaces with fewer significant hazards and lower likelihood of serious injury or illness. For higher-risk environments such as construction, manufacturing or warehousing, the longer 3-day First Aid at Work (FAW) qualification is recommended instead.
EFAW is suitable for designated workplace first aiders, office staff, retail teams, small business owners, site supervisors, volunteers and anyone who may be first on the scene in an emergency. With public EFAW courses running across the UK, employers can find an EFAW course near them and send several team members on EFAW to ensure cover across shifts, holidays and absences. Schools, charities and community organisations also use EFAW to meet their duty of care obligations.
The syllabus covers the priority emergency skills: responding to an unresponsive casualty, performing CPR, using an automated external defibrillator (AED), managing choking, controlling severe bleeding, treating shock, dealing with minor injuries and managing seizures. Every topic is reinforced with hands-on practice using realistic workplace scenarios, so learners leave able to act, not just answer questions.
Learners who complete the course receive a Level 3 Award or professional certificate in Emergency First Aid at Work (depending on the provider, location and course requirements), issued by an awarding body. The certificate is valid for 3 years, after which a full requalification course is required. Annual refresher training between requalifications is recommended by the HSE and helps keep skills sharp.
At Brity, in most cases learners are certificated on the day, or within 24 hours where possible, with a printable PDF to follow. Our instructors are experienced practitioners — many with backgrounds in emergency services, clinical care or workplace safety — and we keep class sizes small (maximum 12 learners) so everyone gets real hands-on time with the equipment.
EFAW stands for Emergency First Aid at Work — a 1-day, HSE-aligned Level 3 Award qualifying learners as a workplace first aider in lower-risk environments.

The right first aid qualification depends on your sector and risk level. The HSE expects employers to base provision on a needs assessment — here's a starting point for common industries.
| Industry | Recommended course | Typical ratio | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low-risk offices & retail (≤25 staff) | At least one EFAW-trained appointed person | — | HSE L74 |
| Low-risk workplaces (25–50 staff) | At least one EFAW first aider | — | HSE L74 |
| Higher-risk (construction, warehousing, manufacturing) | FAW recommended — EFAW may suffice for smaller sites | — | HSE L74 |
Based on HSE L74 Appendix 6 and sector guidance. Always run a documented needs assessment.
The HSE doesn't set fixed numbers — it asks employers to complete a first aid needs assessment. Use the guide below as a starting point. Low hazard covers offices, retail and most service environments. Higher hazard covers construction, manufacturing, warehousing, food processing and similar. In the guidance below, EFAW means Emergency First Aid at Work (1-day course) and FAW means First Aid at Work (3-day course).

| Employees | Lower hazard (office, retail) | Higher hazard (construction, manufacturing) |

| Fewer than 5 | At least 1 Appointed Person | At least 1 Appointed Person — consider EFAW if hazards present |
| 5 – 25 | At least 1 EFAW-trained first aider | At least 1 FAW-trained first aider |
| 26 – 50 | At least 1 EFAW or FAW first aider | At least 1 FAW first aider |
| 51 – 100 | 1 FAW first aider per 100 employees | 1 FAW per 50 employees |
| Over 100 | 1 FAW per additional 100 employees | 1 FAW per additional 50 employees |
