- may — optional or permitted action
These terms are used consistently with their meanings in RFC 2119 and ISO/IEC Directives Part 2.
Foreword
Training carries responsibility.
In regulated, safety-critical, and vocational contexts, training is often treated as a transaction. A course is booked. A certificate is issued. Compliance is recorded.
The Brity™ Standard exists because this approach is insufficient.
Real training must prepare people to act, decide, and respond under pressure. It must build confidence that is justified, competence that is retained, and judgement that can be relied upon when circumstances are unpredictable.
This standard sets out what it means to meet the Brity™ Standard. It defines the principles, requirements, and expectations that underpin Brity-trained education across all domains in which Brity™ operates.
The Brity™ Standard is published openly to promote clarity, accountability, and trust. Certification to the Brity™ Standard, however, is granted solely by Brity™ Group following assessment and ongoing assurance.
1. Scope and Applicability
1.1 Scope
This standard defines the minimum principles and requirements for training, assessment, and certification delivered under the Brity™ name.
It applies to:
- Training programmes delivered directly by Brity™ Group
- Training delivered by approved partners operating under the Brity™ mark
- Digital platforms, systems, and processes used to support Brity-trained education
1.2 Applicability
This standard applies across all Brity™ domains, including but not limited to:
- First Aid
- Care
- Health and Safety
- Vocational and professional education
1.3 Exclusions
This standard does not:
- Replace statutory or regulatory requirements
- Override awarding body rules or legal obligations
- Permit self-certification or claims of Brity-trained status without assessment
Where conflicts arise between this standard and regulatory requirements, the higher requirement shall apply.
2. Definitions and Terminology
For the purposes of this standard, the following definitions apply.
Brity™ Standard
The published principles and requirements governing Brity-trained education.
Brity-trained
A designation indicating that a course, programme, or learner has been assessed and certified by Brity™ Group as meeting the Brity™ Standard.
Certification
Formal recognition, granted by Brity™ Group, that defined requirements of this standard have been met.
Training Provider
An individual or organisation delivering training under the Brity™ name.
Trainer
An individual approved to deliver Brity-trained education.
Learner
An individual undertaking training delivered in accordance with this standard.
Preparedness
The demonstrated ability to recall knowledge, apply skills, and exercise judgement under realistic conditions.
Compliance
The act of meeting minimum external requirements without regard to competence or preparedness.
3. Core Principles
The following principles are non-negotiable and apply across all Brity-trained education.
3.1 Competence over Compliance
Training shall prioritise genuine competence and preparedness over formal compliance alone.
Certificates issued without meaningful assessment of understanding, retention, and application do not meet the Brity™ Standard.
3.2 Preparedness over Volume
Training shall be designed to prepare learners for real-world application, not to maximise throughput, speed, or volume.
Where commercial or operational pressures conflict with preparedness, preparedness shall take precedence.
3.3 Behaviour under Pressure Matters
Training shall account for how people think, decide, and act under stress.
Learning design, delivery, and assessment shall reflect realistic conditions relevant to the domain of training.
3.4 Responsibility Cannot Be Delegated Away
Organisations and individuals responsible for others retain that responsibility regardless of certification status.
Training shall reinforce responsibility, not replace it.
3.5 Clarity over Complexity
Training shall be clear, practical, and focused on essential outcomes.
Unnecessary complexity, jargon, or performative instruction shall be avoided.
3.6 Respect for Learners
All training shall be delivered with dignity, fairness, and respect for learners' time, background, and responsibility.
Accessibility and inclusion are integral to meeting the Brity™ Standard.
4. Normative Training Requirements
This section defines the mandatory requirements that training programmes shall meet in order to comply with the Brity™ Standard.
Where the terms shall, must, or required are used, compliance is mandatory. Where the terms should or may are used, they indicate recommended or optional practices.
4.1 Learning Design Requirements
4.1.1 Training shall be designed around clearly defined learning outcomes that prioritise real-world application over theoretical recall alone.
4.1.2 Learning outcomes shall be specific, observable, and relevant to the responsibilities the learner is expected to hold following training.
4.1.3 Training shall not rely solely on passive learning methods. Opportunities for active participation, discussion, and practical engagement must be included.
4.1.4 Training design shall account for cognitive load, attention span, and retention. Content density shall be appropriate to the duration and context of the course.
4.1.5 Where scenarios are used, they shall reflect realistic conditions relevant to the domain, including time pressure, uncertainty, and decision-making constraints.
4.2 Instructional Delivery Requirements
4.2.1 Training shall be delivered by trainers approved in accordance with Section 6 of this standard.
4.2.2 Instruction shall be clear, structured, and purposeful. Trainers shall avoid unnecessary jargon, ambiguity, or performative complexity.
4.2.3 Trainers shall actively assess learner understanding throughout delivery and adapt instruction where misunderstanding or disengagement is evident.
4.2.4 Training shall encourage questions, clarification, and reflection. Learners shall not be discouraged from seeking understanding.
4.2.5 Where group training is delivered, group size shall allow meaningful interaction, observation, and participation by all learners.
4.3 Practical Skills and Application
4.3.1 Where training involves practical skills, learners shall be given sufficient opportunity to practise those skills under supervision.
4.3.2 Practical instruction shall include demonstration, guided practice, and independent practice.
4.3.3 Skills practice shall not be purely symbolic or demonstrative. Learners must physically perform required actions where reasonably practicable.
4.3.4 Training shall include guidance on common errors, limitations, and realistic expectations of performance under pressure.
4.3.5 Where full realism is not possible, trainers shall clearly explain the limitations of simulation.
4.4 Assessment and Verification of Learning
4.4.1 Training shall include assessment sufficient to verify that learning outcomes have been met.
4.4.2 Assessment shall evaluate both knowledge and practical application where relevant.
4.4.3 Assessment methods shall be appropriate to the risks and responsibilities associated with the training domain.
4.4.4 Assessment shall not be conducted in a manner that prioritises pass rates over competence.
4.4.5 Learners who do not demonstrate required competence shall not be certified as Brity-trained without remediation and reassessment.
4.5 Retention and Preparedness
4.5.1 Training shall be designed to promote retention beyond the immediate training session.
4.5.2 Key concepts and actions shall be reinforced through repetition, variation, or scenario-based application.
4.5.3 Learners shall be informed of the limitations of short-term training and the need for refreshers, practice, or continued learning.
4.5.4 Where refresher or renewal requirements exist, learners shall be made aware of them at the point of certification.
4.6 Ethical Delivery and Responsibility
4.6.1 Training shall be delivered honestly and without misrepresentation of outcomes, guarantees, or competence.
4.6.2 Training shall not imply that certification removes or transfers responsibility from the learner or organisation.
4.6.3 Trainers shall act in the best interests of learner preparedness, even where doing so may conflict with commercial convenience.
4.6.4 Training delivery shall respect learner dignity, safety, and wellbeing at all times.
4.7 Record-Keeping and Evidence
4.7.1 Accurate records of attendance, assessment, and certification shall be maintained.
4.7.2 Records shall be sufficient to demonstrate compliance with this standard if audited.
4.7.3 Certification shall accurately reflect the training delivered and assessment undertaken.
5. Assessment Integrity and Certification Controls
This section defines the requirements governing assessment, certification, and the conditions under which Brity-trained status may be granted, withheld, or withdrawn.
Assessment integrity is fundamental to the Brity™ Standard. Certification without credible assessment undermines preparedness, trust, and public confidence.
5.1 Purpose of Assessment
5.1.1 Assessment shall exist to verify competence, understanding, and preparedness, not to confirm attendance.
5.1.2 Assessment shall be proportionate to the level of responsibility and risk associated with the training domain.
5.1.3 Assessment shall not be treated as a formality, administrative step, or revenue safeguard.
5.2 Assessment Design
5.2.1 Assessment methods shall be aligned directly with the defined learning outcomes of the training programme.
5.2.2 Where practical skills are required, assessment shall include direct observation of skill performance wherever reasonably practicable.
5.2.3 Assessment shall evaluate not only procedural recall but also judgement, prioritisation, and decision-making where relevant.
5.2.4 Assessment methods shall be designed to reduce guesswork and chance success.
5.2.5 Where written, digital, or verbal assessments are used, questions shall be clear, unambiguous, and relevant to real-world application.
5.3 Conduct of Assessment
5.3.1 Assessment shall be conducted by an approved trainer or assessor in accordance with this standard.
5.3.2 Assessors shall apply assessment criteria consistently and fairly to all learners.
5.3.3 Learners shall be informed of assessment criteria and expectations prior to assessment.
5.3.4 Assessment conditions shall allow learners to demonstrate competence without unnecessary distraction or unfair advantage.
5.3.5 Assistance, prompting, or coaching during assessment shall not be provided in a manner that compromises the validity of the result.
5.4 Pass, Fail, and Remediation
5.4.1 Certification shall be granted only where the learner has demonstrably met the required assessment criteria.
5.4.2 Learners who do not meet required standards shall not be certified as Brity-trained.
5.4.3 Where learners do not meet required standards, remediation may be offered, followed by reassessment.
5.4.4 Remediation shall address identified gaps in understanding or performance and shall not consist solely of repeated assessment.
5.4.5 Reassessment shall be conducted with the same integrity and independence as the initial assessment.
5.5 Certification Issuance
5.5.1 Certification shall accurately reflect the training delivered, assessment undertaken, and competence demonstrated.
5.5.2 Certificates shall not be issued in advance of assessment completion.
5.5.3 Same-day certification may be issued where assessment requirements have been fully met and records completed.
5.5.4 Certification shall include:
- learner identification
- course title and scope
- date of completion
- validity period
- issuing authority
5.5.5 Certificates shall not imply guarantees of outcome, immunity from responsibility, or replacement of judgement.
5.6 Validity and Renewal
5.6.1 Certification shall be valid only for the defined period applicable to the training domain.
5.6.2 Learners shall be informed of certification expiry and renewal requirements at the point of issue.
5.6.3 Renewal training shall meet the Brity™ Standard in force at the time of renewal.
5.6.4 Expired certification shall not be represented as current or valid.
5.7 Misuse and Misrepresentation
5.7.1 Claims of being Brity-trained shall not be made without valid certification issued by Brity™ Group or an approved provider.
5.7.2 Misrepresentation of certification status shall be grounds for withdrawal of certification and approval.
5.7.3 Brity™ Group reserves the right to revoke certification where assessment integrity is compromised.
5.7.4 Revocation may occur retrospectively where evidence of non-compliance emerges.
5.8 Audit and Assurance
5.8.1 Brity™ Group shall retain the right to audit assessment and certification processes.
5.8.2 Training providers shall cooperate with audits and provide access to records where requested.
5.8.3 Failure to cooperate with assurance processes shall constitute non-compliance with this standard.
6. Trainer Approval, Oversight, and Disqualification
This section defines the requirements for individuals authorised to deliver training under the Brity™ name, and the conditions under which that authorisation may be maintained, suspended, or withdrawn.
Meeting the Brity™ Standard is not solely a matter of course content. It depends on the competence, judgement, and conduct of the trainer.
6.1 Requirement for Approval
6.1.1 Only trainers approved by Brity™ Group shall be permitted to deliver Brity-trained education.
6.1.2 Approval shall be specific to defined domains and course types. Approval in one domain shall not imply approval in another.
6.1.3 Approval shall be time-limited and subject to ongoing review.
6.2 Minimum Eligibility Criteria
6.2.1 Trainers shall hold all statutory, regulatory, and awarding-body qualifications required for the domain in which they deliver training.
6.2.2 Trainers shall demonstrate subject-matter competence appropriate to the level of responsibility associated with the training.
6.2.3 Trainers shall demonstrate the ability to deliver training clearly, practically, and responsibly in accordance with this standard.
6.2.4 Trainers shall understand and commit to the principles set out in the Brity™ Standard.
6.2.5 Trainers shall meet safeguarding, suitability, and conduct requirements as determined by Brity™ Group, in accordance with the Safeguarding Policy. Concerns regarding trainer conduct may also be raised under the Whistleblowing Policy.
6.3 Approval Process
6.3.1 Trainer approval shall be granted following assessment by Brity™ Group or its authorised representatives.
6.3.2 The approval process may include:
- qualification and experience review
- interview or discussion
- observation of delivery
- assessment of judgement and decision-making
6.3.3 Approval shall not be granted solely on the basis of external accreditation or prior experience.
6.3.4 Brity™ Group reserves the right to refuse approval where the Brity™ Standard cannot be confidently met.
6.4 Ongoing Responsibilities of Trainers
6.4.1 Approved trainers shall deliver training in accordance with the Brity™ Standard at all times.
6.4.2 Trainers shall maintain current competence, qualifications, and domain knowledge.
6.4.3 Trainers shall engage constructively with quality assurance, review, and feedback processes.
6.4.4 Trainers shall act in a manner that upholds the reputation, integrity, and intent of the Brity™ Standard.
6.4.5 Trainers shall prioritise learner preparedness and safety over convenience, speed, or commercial pressure.
6.5 Oversight and Quality Assurance
6.5.1 Brity™ Group shall maintain oversight of trainer performance.
6.5.2 Oversight may include:
- observation of delivery
- learner feedback review
- assessment sampling
- record audits
6.5.3 Trainers shall cooperate fully with oversight and assurance activities.
6.5.4 Failure to engage with quality assurance processes shall constitute non-compliance with this standard.
6.6 Suspension and Remedial Action
6.6.1 Where concerns arise regarding delivery, conduct, or competence, Brity™ Group may suspend trainer approval pending review. This process operates alongside the disciplinary framework set out in the Code of Conduct; where both apply, the more protective measure shall take precedence.
6.6.2 Suspension may be applied where:
- assessment integrity is compromised
- learner safety is at risk
- the Brity™ Standard is not being met
6.6.3 Where appropriate, remedial action may be required prior to reinstatement.
6.6.4 Remedial action shall be proportionate, documented, and focused on restoring compliance with this standard.
6.7 Disqualification and Withdrawal of Approval
6.7.1 Trainer approval shall be withdrawn where serious or persistent non-compliance with the Brity™ Standard is identified. The disciplinary escalation process defined in the Code of Conduct shall apply in parallel where the trainer is subject to Brity™ Group's employment or engagement terms.
6.7.2 Grounds for withdrawal include but are not limited to:
- misrepresentation of competence or certification
- repeated failure to meet delivery standards
- breach of safeguarding or ethical obligations
- refusal to cooperate with oversight or audit
6.7.3 Withdrawal of approval shall result in immediate cessation of delivery under the Brity™ name.
6.7.4 Withdrawn approval shall not be represented as current or valid.
6.8 Re-Approval
6.8.1 Re-approval following withdrawal shall be at the sole discretion of Brity™ Group.
6.8.2 Re-approval shall require evidence that identified deficiencies have been addressed.
6.8.3 Re-approval shall not be assumed or guaranteed.
7. Application of the Brity™ Standard in First Aid
This section defines how the Brity™ Standard is applied within the domain of first aid training.
It supplements, and does not replace, the core requirements set out in Sections 1–6 of this standard. Where domain-specific requirements are defined here, they apply in addition to the core standard.
7.1 Purpose and Context
7.1.1 First aid training is safety-critical. Learners may be required to act under time pressure, uncertainty, and emotional stress.
7.1.2 The purpose of applying the Brity™ Standard in first aid is to ensure that training produces genuine preparedness to recognise emergencies, prioritise actions, and intervene appropriately until professional help arrives.
7.1.3 First aid training shall not be treated as a theoretical subject or administrative requirement. It is a practical capability with real-world consequences.
7.2 Scope of First Aid Training
7.2.1 This section applies to all Brity-trained first aid courses, including but not limited to:
- Emergency First Aid at Work
- First Aid at Work
- Paediatric First Aid
- Workplace and community first aid variants
7.2.2 Domain-specific regulatory or awarding-body requirements shall be met in addition to this standard.
7.3 Learning Outcomes and Preparedness
7.3.1 First aid training shall prioritise the learner's ability to:
- recognise life-threatening conditions
- assess risk and scene safety
- make timely decisions under pressure
- apply appropriate interventions
- seek and coordinate escalation where required
7.3.2 Learning outcomes shall reflect realistic responsibilities rather than idealised or simplified scenarios.
7.3.3 Training shall emphasise prioritisation, not exhaustive recall of procedures.
7.4 Practical Skills Requirements
7.4.1 First aid training shall include hands-on practice of all core interventions relevant to the course scope.
7.4.2 Learners shall physically perform key skills, including but not limited to:
- primary surveys
- cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- use of automated external defibrillators
- management of bleeding and shock
7.4.3 Demonstration-only delivery shall not meet the Brity™ Standard where practical performance is reasonably possible.
7.4.4 Practical exercises shall be supervised and corrected to prevent reinforcement of unsafe or ineffective technique.
7.5 Scenario-Based Learning
7.5.1 Training shall include scenario-based exercises designed to reflect realistic first aid situations.
7.5.2 Scenarios shall introduce elements of:
- time pressure
- ambiguity
- prioritisation between competing needs
7.5.3 Scenarios shall not be presented as scripted performances with predetermined outcomes.
7.5.4 Trainers shall facilitate reflection following scenarios to reinforce learning and judgement.
7.6 Assessment in First Aid Training
7.6.1 Assessment shall verify the learner's ability to apply first aid skills and judgement in realistic conditions.
7.6.2 Practical assessment shall include direct observation of skill performance.
7.6.3 Assessment shall evaluate decision-making and prioritisation, not solely procedural accuracy.
7.6.4 Learners who cannot demonstrate safe and appropriate intervention shall not be certified as Brity-trained in first aid without remediation.
7.7 Retention, Refresh, and Ongoing Preparedness
7.7.1 Learners shall be informed that first aid skills degrade without practice.
7.7.2 Training shall communicate the importance of refresher training and continued engagement with skills.
7.7.3 Where applicable, Brity™ platforms shall support reminders, refreshers, or rebooking to promote ongoing preparedness.
7.8 Ethical and Responsible Framing
7.8.1 First aid training shall reinforce that intervention carries responsibility and judgement.
7.8.2 Training shall not imply certainty of outcome or guarantee of success.
7.8.3 Learners shall be encouraged to act within their competence and training while recognising the limits of first aid intervention.
8. Use of the Brity™ Name, Mark, and Claims
This section defines the conditions under which the Brity™ name, mark, and associated claims may be used, and the restrictions governing their use.
