What is Emergency First Aid at Work?

Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) is a one-day, HSE-aligned workplace first aid qualification that trains a designated first aider to give immediate, life-saving help until professional help arrives. It is a regulated Level 3 Award and is the minimum standard recommended for low-risk workplaces under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981.

What does Emergency First Aid at Work cover?

EFAW covers the core life-saving skills a workplace first aider needs: the primary survey (DR ABC), adult CPR and use of an AED, the recovery position, choking in adults, serious bleeding and shock, minor injuries, and how to assess and respond to an unresponsive casualty. The Manchester course is hands-on throughout, with practical assessment built into the day rather than a separate exam.

How long does the Emergency First Aid at Work course take?

EFAW is a one-day course — a single session of around six contact hours. Our Manchester sessions typically run 09:00 to 16:00 with a lunch break, and learners go home the same day with their certificate.

How long is an Emergency First Aid at Work certificate valid for?

An EFAW certificate is valid for three years from the course date, in line with HSE guidance. The HSE strongly recommends a short annual refresher in between to keep skills current, and you will need to retake the full one-day course before the three years expire to stay qualified.
